Zoey Whittingham scored 19 points, and Jessica Nonn added 16 as
Catonsville High girls’ basketball team upset No. 4 Western, 61-51, at
the 12th annual Basketball Academy at Morgan State University Saturday.
The Comets (9-2) built a 33-20 halftime lead, and led by as many as 20
points before the defending Baltimore City champs made a charge. But it
wasn’t enough as the Baltimore County school bounced back from a 61-51
loss to No. 5 City CollegeThursday afternoon.
Junior guard Shamika Williams added 13 points for Catonsville. Junior
guard Akeema Richards led all scorers with 21 points for the Doves (7-2), and
junior guard Keirah Hicks contributed 10.
The Comets raced to a 19-7 first quarter with Nonn scoring six and
Williams, Whittingham and junior forward Shelby Polk adding four.
Whittingham, a freshman guard, added eight in the second quarter.
Catonsville led 51-33 after three periods.
“We didn’t come to play. We didn’t play any defense,” said Western
coach Tiffany Silver. “They [Catonsville] didn’t want to lose two games
in a row. They lost to a city school Thursday and didn’t want to lose
to another one.”
The Comets return to Baltimore County action Wednesday, hosting Kenwood.
